Five Best Practices for fMRI research

چکیده

The replication crisis in science has not spared functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) research. A range of issues including insufficient control false positives, code bugs, concern regarding generalizability and replicability findings, inadequate characterization physiological confounds, over-mining repository datasets, the small sample sizes/low power many early studies have led to hearty debate both field press about usefulness viability fMRI. Others still see enormous potential for fMRI diagnosing conditions that do otherwise lend themselves non-invasive biological measurement, from chronic pain neurological psychiatric illness. How we reconcile limitations with hype over its potential? Despite papers hailed by as nail coffin fMRI, dead salmon incident 2009 cluster failure more recently, funders, researchers, general public seem reduced their appetite pictures brain maps, or gadgets word “neuro” name. Multiple blogs exist sole purpose criticizing such enterprise. should certainly give ‘neuroimagers’ pause, reason soul-search. It is important than ever clarify when it useful. method remains best noninvasive tool research questions, however imperfect imprecise may be. However, address past limitations, I argue neuroimaging researchers planning future need consider following five factors: power/effect size, design optimization, replicability, data sharing.

Five years post-DORA: promoting best practices for research assessment

The San Francisco Declaration on Research Assessment (DORA) was penned 5 years ago to articulate best practices for how we communicate and judge our scientific contributions. In particular, it adamantly declared that Journal Impact Factor (JIF) should never be used as a surrogate measure of the quality of individual research contributions, or for hiring, promotion, or funding decisions. Since t...

Best practices research.

"Best practices research," described in this paper, refers to a systematic process used to identify, describe, combine, and disseminate effective and efficient clinical and/or management strategies developed and refined by practicing clinicians. It involves five steps: development of a conceptual model or series of steps, definition of "best" based on values and standards, identification and ev...

Best Practices for Clinical and Translational Research and Implementation

Scientists in all sectors have been raising concerns in recent years about the lack of reproducibility of biomedical research results. An analysis of in-house validation efforts at Bayer HealthCare found that <25% of potential targets could be reproduced in-house.1 Similarly, of 53 “landmark” studies selected because they described completely new findings, only 11% could be confirmed in-house b...

Rigor or Mortis: Best Practices for Preclinical Research in Neuroscience

Numerous recent reports document a lack of reproducibility of preclinical studies, raising concerns about potential lack of rigor. Examples of lack of rigor have been extensively documented and proposals for practices to improve rigor are appearing. Here, we discuss some of the details and implications of previously proposed best practices and consider some new ones, focusing on preclinical stu...
